I’m excited to be heading down to the First Niagara Center to see the Sabres take on the visiting Winnipeg Jets tonight! I never had the opportunity to see the first version of the Jets play against my hometown team, so I’m hoping tonight will finally fill that void.
I’ve seen the Thrashers play in Buffalo a few times, but there is something more thrilling about tonight then seeing Atlanta as the opposing team. The Jets were a storied franchise that lasted a very short time, but the appeal of the brand and name never seemed to fade away.
Considering how much tickets are in Winnipeg, I’m expecting there to be a good number of Canadian fans in the stands to welcome their new team. Even if nobody flies in from Winnipeg itself, I’m sure there will be a massive contingent of ex-Leafs fans who are following the team from its pseudo-inception.
It will be interesting to see who starts in net for the Sabres, considering Ryan Miller has seemingly been outplayed by backup Jhonas Enroth. While many Sabres fans feel that Enroth is the better of the two goaltenders (as of late), you also have to wonder if the players are just playing harder in front of their backup to ensure they don’t have to dig themselves out of a hole. The notion that Miller is impenetrable is now completely dispelled, so if he does get the start tonight (as coach Lindy Ruff seems to have told the Buffalo News), I’m sure the players will come out flying in front of him.
As a fun side note, former Sabre/Jet Dale Hawerchuk will be honored alongside broadcasting legend Rick Jeanneret as they are inducted into the Buffalo Sabres Hall of Fame. I find it fitting that Hawerchuk receive his sabre in front of “both” of his two teams, even though it is Jets Version 2. Surely, it will be a night to remember.
